Federal Government To Train 50 Ex-Militants At Univesity In Abeokuta

No fewer than 50 former Niger Delta militants are expected to undergo training at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) as part of the Federal Government’s amnesty programme.
PMNEWS reports that the ex militants will be trained in various aspects of agriculture at the higher institution of learning.
According to a don of the institution, Dr Kayode Akinyemi, while speaking at a press conference on Monday ahead of  the 21st and 22nd Convocation of the university, the ex-militants will be trained in poultry science, crop improvement, livestock production, environmental management and other areas of agriculture.
The lecturer, who is the Director of Academic Planning at the institution, said that: “The programme is a brainchild of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and this institution was chosen on the strength that FUNAAB is now a centre of excellence in agricultural development and sustainable environment.
"Arrangement is on to train the former Niger Delta agitators in some agricultural practices that will eventually lead them to acquiring some competence, thereby becoming engaged.”
Akinyemi also stated that the aim of the programme is to rehabilitate and resettle the former militants, adding that the programme will start soon.
“This programme is part of the efforts to rehabilitate these ex-militants. It is going to be for three months, a short term training, which will later snowball into degree and Post-graduate degree programme. The Federal Government is going to be responsible for the payment of the fees for the 50 first batch students,” Akinyemi stated.

We Will Bring Down Nigeria If Boko Haram Attacks Igboland – MASSOB

The Movement for Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra has threatened to “bring down” Nigeria should any part of the Southeast be bombed. And this is coming days after bombs were discovered at Winners’ Chapel church in Owerri and alleged Boko Haram members arrested in Abia.

MASSOB leader Ralph Uwazuruike, who spoke in a telephone interview with The Nation, warned that his group would no longer tolerate the mindless killing of Ndigbo in any part of the country.
According to him, the movement would “retaliate with equal and decisive force if terrorists attack any city in the zone”.
His words:
“The position of MASSOB on this matter is firm. We will bring down Nigeria, if any bomb goes off in the Southeast. We can no longer tolerate the mindless killing of Ndigbo in any part of Nigeria because we will retaliate with equal force against any attack on any part of Igboland.”
The group also warned against what it described as the deliberate posting of military, police, Customs and Immigration officers, who are Igbo, to the Northeast to confront the Boko Haram insurgents.
It alleged that their counterparts from the North were being posted to the Southeast for safety. But MASSOB did not support its stand with figures. MASSOB claimed that such a measure was part of the grand plan of the pre-Nigerian civil war agenda to totally annihilate Igbo officers and men in the nation’s military by the powers that be.

Wanted Boko Haram chief among 486 suspects held

Shocking revelation during investigation
Security probes letters
The Defence Headquarters said yesterday that a wanted terror suspect was among the 486. I
It also said other security agencies and para-military organisations had joined the ongoing screening of the suspects.
The Director of Defence Information, Gen. Chris Olukolade, in a statement last night in Abuja, said:
“A terror kingpin on the list of wanted terrorists of security forces in Nigeria has been detected in the ongoing screening of the 486 suspects nabbed while travelling in over 33 Hiace Hummer buses at night along Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway last Sunday.
“So far, other security agencies including the para-military have joined “the screening exercise to ascertain the status of the remaining suspects.
“Those identified as possible security risk or illegal immigrants are expected to be identified for further action.
“Meanwhile, the identified terror kingpin has been taken into custody.  Further development will be communicated to you in due course.”
Although the statement was silent on the wanted  kingpin, the defunct Joint Task Force (JTF)  on November 23, 2012  placed ransom on 19 leaders of Boko Haram.
It was not immediately clear if the arrested suspect is in the category of the wanted 19.
The list  had five members of the Shurra Committee (the highest making body of the sect) and 14 Boko Haram commanders.

Why Sudan refused to release Nyanya bombing mastermind to Nigeria

According to reports, the extradition of suspected Nyanya bombing mastermind, Aminu-Sadiq Ogwuche from Sudan might take longer than expected.
This was attributed to the fact that the Sudanese government has refused to co-operate as they do not have any extradition agreement with any nation in the world.
Ogwuche is believed to have been responsible for the April 14 bombing in Nyanya, Abuja which claimed the lives of about a 100 people.
Vanguard reports:
Saturday Vanguard gathered that Sudan’s refusal to extradite Ogwuche followed the alleged intervention of a powerful Nigerian in one of the traditional institutions in Nigeria. He was was said to have moved in to stop the extradition of Ogwuche using the instrumentality of his Alma Mata, African International University, in Sudan.
Apart from this, Sudan whose President, Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, ICC, for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur, has no bilateral agreement with any country in the world on extradition of criminals.

‘Lost students’: Nollywood drops 2 movies on the abducted Chibok schoolgirls (LOOK)

Nollywood will never cease to amaze us with the silliest of story lines in movies churned out weekly.
After the Aluu 4 killing in 2012, a movie of the horrible incident was made few weeks later and now the Chibok girls kidnapping has inspired some smart movie producers to come out with two movies; ‘Lost students’ and ‘The missing school girls’.
Not making a movie about the abduction would have actually been surprising – Nollywood producers don’t play.

Nigerian woman smuggled to the UK to work as sex slave & forced to undergo voodoo to prevent her from running away

3 members of an international prostitution ring that smuggled a Nigerian woman into the UK to work as a sex slave under the threat of a voodoo curse faced jail yesterday June 13, UK Daily Mail reports
The gang conned the innocent 23-year-old into flying to Heathrow Airport on a bogus passport with the promise of education, a job and a new home.
Before leaving Nigeria, she was raped and forced to go through a black magic ‘juju’ death ritual to prevent her running away.
But when the woman arrived in London, her employment failed to materialize. Instead, she was told she was destined to work as a sex slave in Italy, a court heard.
Convicted: Gang members; Johnson Olayinka (left) and Florence Obadiaru (right). Continue...

The plan was only thwarted when Italian authorities spotted her forged ID and sent her back to the UK.

It is believed the woman is just one of many victims of the group, based in Africa, that traffics young women through England to work as prostitutes in mainland Europe.

Olusoji Oluwafemi, 44, Johnson Olayinka, 45, and Florence Obadiaru, 48, were convicted of trafficking the woman into the UK for sexual exploitation and arranging for her transfer to Italy.
Oluwafemi and Olayinka were also found guilty of conspiring to get the woman a false passport.

Oluwatosin Osoba, 48, was acquitted of the same charge following a trial at the Old Bailey.

RMD reacts to bad health rumour, says I'm in th best shape of my life

There have been rumours both online and on entertainment magazines that Nollywood icon and Delta State Commissioner for Culture & Tourism, Richard Mofe-Damijo, has health issues probably because of his recent weight loss. I saw him a while back and he looked more handsome than ever!

Anyway, RMD has reacted to the rumours, saying he's better than ever.

"What else do you need? You saw me on stage, did I look sick? People are probably so disappointed to see me looking so much better they want the news to be true. Unfortunately for them, I am in the best shape of my life.
"Have you not taken photos of me. It amazes me how people cling to bad news. I am a public servant in Delta State, I go to work every day. I am not sick. I changed my lifestyle and lost weight and I am looking better than I have ever looked in my adult life. For the records, I am not on Facebook and my colleagues that they used their names as those who posted the stories have all denied it.”RMD told Weekend Groove
Left is RMD at Amaka Igwe's Tribute night on Monday and right is RMD at the Delta Entertainment Awards in Asaba two days ago where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

‘Hundreds dead’ in Boko Haram village rampage

Hundreds of people are feared dead in a suspected Boko Haram attack on four villages in northeast Nigeria, in the latest upsurge in violence claiming increasing numbers of civilian lives.
Some community leaders put the death toll from the Tuesday attacks in the Gwoza district of Borno state as high as 400 to 500, although there was no independent verification because of poor communications in the remote area.
If confirmed, the attacks in the villages of Goshe, Attagara, Agapalwa and Aganjara would be among the deadliest in the Islamists' five-year insurgency and top the more than 300 who were killed on May 5 in nearby Gamboru Ngala.
"The killings are massive but nobody can give a toll for now because nobody has been able to go to that place because the insurgents are still there. They have taken over the whole area," lawmaker Peter Biye told AFP.
"There are bodies littered over the whole area and people have fled," added Biye, who represents Gwoza in Nigeria's lower chamber of parliament, the House of Representatives.
Boko Haram's bloody reign of terror in northeast Nigeria is forcing 800 people to flee from their homes every day and has claimed more than 3,000 lives in the past year, the Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) said.

BEHOLD NIGERIA'S 23 MAN WORLD CUP SQUAD

Stephen Keshi did not spring any surprises with his selection for Brazil, with the likes of Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo and Echiejile making the cut alongside 19 debutants

The reigning African champions will be making their fifth appearance at world football's major showpiece and have been drawn in the same group with Argentina, Iran and Bosnia.
Experienced names such as Vincent Enyeama, Austin Ejide, Joseph Yobo and Elderson Echiejile who were part of the squad to South Africa 2010 made the final list and will look to make amends for their group stage exit in their last outing.
Top scorer of the 29th Africa Cup of Nations, Emmanuel Emenike, Godfrey Oboabona, John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses will be expected to make their World Cup debut when the championship kicks off.

Victor's World Cup Dream

There was silence across the country.
The streets are completely deserted except for a few stray dogs and chickens that strolled aimlessly in search of grub. Everyone had hurried home to watch the football match.
They display the whole spectrum of emotions largely oscillating between excitement and anxiety as the match progresses. Sometimes, shouts of delight would puncture the silence. At other times, shouts of anguish would invade the air.
It was the finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The Times of London had described this year’s competition as “the year of the underdogs.” A Nigerian-based newspaper was quite prescient. In its editorial, it wrote that 2014 is “Nigeria’s date with history.”
Nigeria had been making global headlines since the tournament started. It all began with Nigeria’s invasion of Iran in her opening match. In the second match, Nigeria not only beat but also humiliated Bosnia-Herzegovina. The team went on to annihilate Argentina in the last match of the group stage. Italy, Spain, England and Germany suffered similar fates at the hands of the seemingly unstoppable Super Eagles, who had not lost a single match since the competition started on June 12. No African team had ever come this far in the previous editions of the tournament. Against all odds, Nigeria eventually managed to get to the finals!

Brazil still straining to complete World Cup stadiums 10 days before kickoff

With 10 days until the World Cup begins, Brazil was rushing Monday to finish installing seats in stadiums and to deal with threats ranging from violent protests to dengue fever.
The count-down to kick off has been marred by protests — from striking drivers who abandoned their buses mid-route to indigenous leaders in bright-feathered headdresses shooting arrows at police.
Anger over the more than $11 billion being spent on the event has raised fears of a return to the violence seen last year during the Confederation Cup, a World Cup dress rehearsal.
Then, clashes erupted as a million people flooded the streets calling for more money for social programs and less for stadiums.
But recent protests have been smaller, with journalists and street vendors sometimes outnumbering the crowds of anti-government demonstrators chanting: “There won’t be a World Cup!”
In a country that takes pride in its five World Cup titles, the tournament is starting to unleash growing excitement, with media providing exhaustive coverage of the Brazilian team’s training camp.
That national ambivalence is the target of a viral social network joke.

Nigerian capital police ban ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ campaign demonstrations

Supporters of more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamist militants headed to court on Tuesday to challenge a police ban on protest marches in the Nigerian capital, calling the decision illegal.
The Bring Back Our Girls campaign said it would seek to overturn the ban, which the Federal Capital Territory police announced on Monday because of what they said were security concerns.
Boko Haram fighters kidnapped 276 girls from their school in the remote northeastern town of Chibok on April 14. A total of 219 are still missing and an international effort to locate and rescue them is ongoing.
March organisers Oby Ezekwesili and Hadiza Bala Usman said their protests over the last 34 days had been peaceful and they could not understand the ban, as police had previously indicated the demonstrations were within the law.
A protest planned for Tuesday had been cancelled, they added. Instead, the group would accompany their lawyers to court where they hoped to obtain "an immediate restraint on this unconstitutional,

Terrorist bombing at Nigerian soccer match kills at least 40

A bomb attack targeting fans at a football match in Nigeria‘s restive northeast killed at least 40 people on Sunday..
“There has been a bomb explosion at a football field this evening and so far more than 40 people have been killed,” said the officer who requested anonymity in the town of Mubi, which has seen previous attacks by Boko Haram Islamists.
The policeman’s account was confirmed by a nurse at the Mubi General Hospital, who also requested anonymity, as the health worker was not authorised to discuss the attack with the media.
Mubi is located in Adamawa state, one of three in the northeast which has been under a state of emergency for more than a year as the military has tried to crush Boko Haram’s five-year extremist uprising.

Investigation: More than 500 child abuse reports made against BBC star Jimmy Savile

More than 500 reports of abuse on victims aged as young as two have been made against late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, according to a new investigation by the NSPCC charity published Monday.
The probe found that Savile, one of the biggest TV stars in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, exploited high-level contacts to gain access to vulnerable victims at a high-security psychiatric hospital.
“There’s no doubt that Savile is one of the most, if not the most, prolific sex offender that we at the NSPCC have ever come across,” said Peter Watt, director of child protection at the children’s charity.
“What you have is somebody who at his most prolific lost no opportunity to identify vulnerable victims and abuse them.”
The investigation was commissioned by BBC programme Panorama and will be aired at 8.30pm local time (1930 GMT).
The report uncovered government documents that showed a senior civil servant had pushed for Savile to be appointed as head of a task force to resolve a dispute between trade unions and management of the Broadmoor psychiatric hospital in southern England in 1988.

Australia grants refugee visas to more than 500 Afghans for their help in war

Australia has granted refugee visas to more than 500 Afghans for their help during its mission in the war-torn nation, saying their safety would be jeopardised by remaining in the country.
The Afghan nationals, mainly interpreters, were resettled with their families in late 2013 and early 2014, the government revealed in a statement late Sunday.
“Many of these employees were placed at significant risk of harm by insurgents in Afghanistan, due to the highly visible and dangerous nature of their employment,” Defence Minister David Johnston said.
He added that it had been imperative for the government to deal with the process discreetly, given the risks involved, which is why Canberra had not commented on their fate before now.
Immigration Minister Scott Morrison called their resettlement a “significant achievement”.
“This policy reflects Australia’s fulfillment of its moral obligation to those who provided invaluable support to Australia’s efforts in Afghanistan,” he said.

Japan to start building underground ice wall at Fukushima

Japan will on Monday start constructing an underground ice wall at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, freezing the soil under broken reactors to slow the build-up of radioactive water, officials said.
The wall is intended to block groundwater from nearby hillsides that has been flowing under the plant and mixing with polluted water already there.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority, the national watchdog, last week gave the go-ahead to beginning the construction of the ice wall at Fukushima Daiichi, owned and operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO).

Afghan government protests against U.S. deal to free Taliban prisoners

Afghanistan’s government protested against a U.S. deal to free five high-ranking Taliban militants in exchange for a U.S. soldier arguing the transfer of the men from a Guantanamo Bay jail to Qatar violated international law.
The five prisoners were flown to Qatar on Sunday as part of the agreement to release Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the only known U.S. prisoner of war in Afghanistan, held captive for five years. Bergdahl was flown out of Afghanistan to a military hospital in Germany on Sunday.
The prisoner swap has stoked anger in Afghanistan, where many view the deal as a further sign of a U.S. desire to disengage from Afghanistan as quickly as possible. Washington has mapped out a plan to fully withdraw all of its troops by the end of 2016.
“No government can transfer citizens of a country to a third country as prisoners,” the Afghan Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement issued late on Sunday.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who was excluded from the deal to avoid leaks according to the U.S. government, has not commented on the prisoner swap, although the foreign ministry statement was emailed from his media office.
