American Kenneth Bae 'admits' crime, calls on US to help free him from North Korea

In a videotaped "press conference" experts believe was almost certainly given under duress, American missionary Kenneth Bae confessed to committing crimes against North Korea and appealed to the U.S. to help free him.
Speaking under guard, the 45-year-old said he has been treated well and that Pyongyang has provided him "humanitarian support," according to China's state-run news agency Xinhua, which has a presence in Pyongyang.
Bae said the address was given at his own request, though it is not unusual for prisoners in North Korea to say after their release that they spoke in similar situations under duress.

Nigerians in Saudi Arabia change names to avoid deportation -Envoy

Nigerian Ambassador to
the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia, Mr. Abubakar
Bunu, has said many
Nigerian emigrants are
changing their names to
outsmart authorities and
avoid deportation.
Bunu, who disclosed this to
journalists in Gusau on
Saturday, said many of the
emigrants had gone into
hiding, thereby making it
difficult for law
enforcement agents to
trace them.
He explained that in spite
of joint efforts by the Saudi
authorities and officials of the Nigerian Embassy
there to locate them, only about 500 persons had
been repatriated in the last six months.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Bunu said
the embassy had discovered that some of the
emigrants, who had lived there for upwards of 25
years, had crossed through different routes
including Sudan and Yemen or as pilgrims on lesser
hajj and refused to return.
Bunu stated that although the figure of Nigerians
staying illegally in the kingdom was not known, the
Saudi authorities said it was over one million.
He therefore advised Nigerians who want to stay in
the Arabian country to regularise their documents
with the authorities to avoid unwarranted
embarrassment.
Some deportees, who were brought back to Gusau
recently and spoke to NAN on condition of
anonymity, however claimed hat 'only when one was
hit with hard luck that the person gets arrested and
deported.'
They maintained that many Nigerians still lived
normal lives in Mecca and Madinah by going to the
markets and praying at the Holy Mosques without
being harassed.
They said, 'We will still go back whenever we get the
chance.' We still have our family members and
personal belongings there.'
NAN reports that the ambassador was in the state to
attend the state's PDP elders and stakeholders
meeting organised by the party's caretaker
leadership in Gusau. NAN

PDP’s problems goes beyond Tukur’s resignation

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday said that the problems of the Peoples Democratic Party were beyond the resignation of Dr. Bamanga Tukur, as the party’s national chairman.
The media aide to the former President, Mr. Tunde Oladunjoye, in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja, said Obasanjo had nothing personal against Tukur.
But he said Obasanjo would not comment on Tukur’s resignation, arguing that the issues earlier raised by the former President had not been addressed with Tukur’s exit.

FAAN DENIES APPROVING BI- CORTNEY;S TERMINAL

THE Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has denied giving approval for the design of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (Domestic Terminal 2) by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited Lagos.
In a statement yesterday, FAAN’s spokesman, Yakubu Dati, said: “FAAN’s attention has been drawn to a news story quoting Bi-Courtney Aviation Services as saying that the design of MMA Domestic Terminal 2 was approved by the Federal Government and FAAN after due consultation with their consultants.
“We wish to state categorically and for the umpteen times that nothing could be further from the truth. The design that FAAN approved was for a terminal costing a total of N3.9 billion.
“However, without approval from FAAN, Bi-Courtney went ahead of its own volition, to build a terminal different from the one originally approved, the cost of which it put at N38 billion, nearly 10 times the approved cost. There was no way FAAN could have approved a terminal at a cost of N38 billion for a 12-year concession because it did not make sense.”

South Sudan: “What I saw was a horror,” says top Human Rights Official

GENEVA, Switzerland, January 17, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Fighting in South Sudan has turned into a horrifying humanitarian and human rights disaster with mass atrocities committed by both sides, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Šimonovic said on Friday at the end of a four-day visit to the country.

“The conflict has now reached the threshold of an internal armed conflict, causing untold suffering for thousands of civilians,” said Šimonovic.

“Mass atrocities have been committed by both sides. During my visit, I have received reports of mass killings, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, sexual violence, the widespread destruction of property and the use of children in the conflict,” he said. “One month of conflict has set South Sudan back a decade.”

“Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands are now displaced, with some 70,000 people seeking protection in UN camps and 30,000 in the two UN compounds in Juba alone,” he added.

“Clearly the crisis, which started as a political one, has now taken on an inter-ethnic dimension that urgently needs to be addressed. People on both sides are absolutely convinced that the other side is to blame, which makes the situation even more dangerous. This highlights the need for an independent fact-finding commission to establish the truth of these terrible events,” said Šimonovic.

“The worst affected communities are in Juba and in communities which have changed hands several times, like those in Bentiu and Bor. This has led to widespread communal violence and destruction. I have not been able to visit Malakal, so I cannot comment on the situation there,” Šimonovic highlighted.

The Assistant Secretary-General visited the town of Bentiu, Unity State, which has been the scene of heaving fighting over the past few weeks.

“What I saw was a horror. Destruction and death is everywhere in Bentiu, which has now become a ghost town,” he said. “I myself saw some 15 bodies lying on a road. The extent of the looting, burning and destruction is hard to grasp for anybody who hasn't been there.”

Šimonovic also visited Bor, which is located in Jonglei State. “All civilians have fled the city which was a ghost town. I spoke to the leader of the anti-government forces, Peter Gadet, to remind him of his and his forces obligations to protect civilians.”

In Juba, the Assistant Secretary-General also received allegations of a mass atrocity at a police station in the Gudele neighbourhood of the city where large numbers of civilians were reportedly rounded up, taken to a building and killed because of their ethnicity. “We are continuing our investigation into this very serious incident,” Šimonovic said.

In Juba, Bor and Bentiu, the Assistant Secretary-General met senior government officials, anti-government forces, armed groups, UN officials, the diplomatic community and a wide range of civil society actors, including traditional and community leaders. He also met displaced people and victims of the fighting.

“Accountability is key. An independent and impartial fact-finding commission should be established as quickly as possible. Those who committed these terrible crimes, who ordered them or those who did nothing to prevent them while they were in a position to do so, all these people should be held accountable without delay,” he said. “I made this very clear to military leaders on both sides.”

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has played a key role in protecting civilians over the past few weeks, Šimonovic noted. “If UNMISS had not opened their gates to protect civilians fleeing the violence, there is no doubt that killings on an even larger scale would have happened. Their impartial presence is also of great importance to help preventing further atrocities from being committed and for the protection of civilians. The reinforcement of their human rights

Jennifer Lopez, talks about her love life, says: I do “not like to be alone”

Jennifer Lopez Talks Marc Anthony Split, Boyfriend Casper Smart: I Do “Not Like to Be Alone&quo …

Jenny from the block is just telling it like it is. During a panel for American Idol’s upcoming Season 13, returning judge Jennifer Lopez opened up about her split from ex-husband Marc Anthony, if marriage is in her future (she’s been dating dancer-choreographer Casper Smart for two years) and — to be blunt, how she’s not afraid to admit that she doesn’t like being single.

Shortly after her summer 2011 separation from Anthony, 45, the singer went on tour, marking a new chapter for the star. “That was a transformative year for me in so many ways. I had just divorced, and I went on tour with the kids and it was just like, ‘hooooo!’ And I left Idol. It’s like all my security blankets were gone and I was out there doing something I had never done before,” she said. (Lopez, 44, and the Spanish singer split in July 2011 after seven years of marriage. The pair are parents to twins Max and Emme, 5. The singer went on to join the FOX series as a judge for seasons 10 and 11 in 2011 and 2012 respectively.)

Lopez was married twice before Anthony. In January 1998, she divorced Ojani Noa after one year of marriage, and, after a notable relationship with Diddy, she married dancer Cris Judd in 2001 until their divorce in 2003. In arguably her most high-profile romance, she dated Ben Affleck for over two years. The exes — known as “Bennifer” at the time — called off their engagement in 2004.

“I’m one of those people who does not like to be alone. I have no shame saying that at this point in my life,” she explained during the panel. “I think we have to own who we are.”

As for walking down the aisle for the fourth time? “I don’t know, I don’t know, we’ll see,” she said. “I always believed in that institution. My parents were married for a very long time, for 35 years. I believe in it. It’s difficult. I’ve had my challenges but at the same time I believe in love. That’s the main thing.”
